What is Artisan Jewellery — And Why It's Worth Choosing - Lodorfo

What is Artisan Jewellery, and Why It's Worth Choosing

"Artisan" gets used a lot. On packaging, in brand names, on labels attached to things that were made by machines in factories. Like most words that mean something, it's been borrowed by things that don't quite deserve it.

So what does artisan jewellery actually mean , and how do you know when you're looking at the real thing?

The definition worth keeping

Artisan jewellery is jewellery made by a skilled maker or small studio, with craftsmanship at the centre of the process. It typically uses traditional or specialist techniques and is produced individually or in small batches rather than through large-scale mass production.

Each piece carries something of the person who made it, whether that's a variation in texture, tension or form, or simply the evidence of a process guided by human hands.

The word sits naturally alongside "art" and "craft." It suggests skill, intention and care rather than anonymous production at scale.

What artisan jewellery is not

It's not just jewellery that looks handmade. A lot of mass-produced jewellery is designed to look artisan : imperfect finishes, organic shapes, textured surfaces, while being produced at scale through standardised manufacturing.

Real artisan jewellery takes time. It can't be scaled without losing something. That's not a weakness. It's the point.

Why small batch matters

Artisan makers often work in small batches, producing limited quantities of each design and frequently making pieces to order. This has two effects worth understanding.

First, availability reflects the reality of the making process. There are only so many pieces one maker or small studio can create at a time.

Second, small batch and made-to-order production can help reduce unnecessary overstock. Rather than producing large quantities in anticipation of demand, pieces can be created in response to it. For Lodorfo, that means making thoughtfully and keeping excess production to a minimum.

What makes Lodorfo artisan

Every Lodorfo piece is handcrafted in our UK studio Bracelets are hand-braided from leather and cord, earrings yarn-wrapped by hand, necklaces hand-woven or handstrung bead by bead. No two pieces are identical.

We work in small batches and make to order. Each piece is finished with hypoallergenic stainless steel findings, chosen for durability, not just aesthetics, and presented in eco-conscious gift-ready packaging.

How to spot genuine artisan jewellery

A few markers worth looking for when you're shopping:

Made by named makers or a named studio. Not anonymous "our team" language that could mean anything.

Small batch or made to order. Many artisan makers produce in limited quantities or make pieces in response to orders rather than holding large amounts of stock.

Visible craft. Look for evidence of techniques such as braiding, weaving, stringing or wrapping, and for makers who explain how their pieces are produced.

Honest materials. Artisan makers tend to be specific about what their pieces are made from, because they've chosen those materials deliberately.

Making time. Made-to-order jewellery naturally takes time to produce. A maker who explains their process and realistic creation times gives you a clearer picture of what happens between ordering and dispatch.

Why it's worth choosing

Artisan jewellery can cost more than mass-produced alternatives. That's true. But the calculation is different because you're paying for materials, time, skill and the process of making in smaller quantities.

You're buying something made with intention. Something that carries the marks of its making. Something that, when someone asks where you got it, has an answer worth giving.
